The Throat Chakra
Fifth Chakra - Vishuddha
Expression
The fifth chakra, Vishudda, located in the throat region, connects us to our expressive self, reinforcing communication, speech and healing. When off-balance there may be issues of self-expression, fear of no power or control. When in balance, we can express our truth without worrying about what others may think.

Herbs to Balance the Throat Chakra
Herbs that cleanse and soothe can be beneficial for bringing balance to the throat chakra. Sage is popular because of its cleansing energy, peppermint for its cooling freshness, and liquorice root for its comforting effect on the throat. Slippery elm and marshmallow root are also popular for their softening, nurturing qualities, while blue lotus is sometimes chosen for its calming, expressive symbolism. Enjoyed as teas, tinctures, or part of a mindful ritual, these herbs can complement meditation, journaling, and breath-work, helping create a sense of openness, ease, and authentic voice in daily life. Everyday herbs you may want to try include:
Fennel
Cinnamon
Clove
Black pepper
Peppermint
Lavender
Lobelia
Crystals to Balance the Throat Chakra
For throat chakra balance, crystals in calming shades of blue are popular because of their connection to communication, truth, and self-expression. Aquamarine is used for its clear, serene energy, while blue lace agate is chosen for its gentle, soothing feel. Lapis lazuli brings depth, wisdom, and confidence, while sodalite is often associated with clarity of thought and honest expression. Turquoise and blue apatite are also popular choices for inspiring creativity and open dialogue. Worn as jewellery, placed on an altar, or used during meditation, these can support rituals that encourage authentic voice and mindful communication. The most popular ones are:
Saphire
Aquamarine
Amazonite
Turquoise
Lapis Lazuli
Sodalite
Essential Oils to Balance the Throat Chakra
Essential oils that sooth the throat and ease the flow of breath from the nostrils through the throat and mouth are particular popular when working to bring the throat chakra into balance. Lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, and chamomile are commonly used. Lavender promotes calm and clarity, while peppermint and eucalyptus provide a refreshing, opening sensation that may encourage clear communication. Chamomile supports relaxation and emotional balance, helping to ease tension that can block honest expression. These oils can be diffused, added to a warm bath, or diluted with a carrier oil for topical use around the neck and chest area. The most popular oils are:
Peppermint
Basil
Chamomile
Eucalyptus
Jasmine
Rose
Sandalwood
When the throat chakra is balanced we are able to communicate openly, clearly and authentically - without fearing judgement from others. As well as feeling confident in ourselves and being able to speak our truth and needs, which includes establishing and maintaining boundaries, we feel a sense of ease in our neck, jawline and shoulders. Speaking my truth and being able to free my voice, especially talking about my past, has been a key part of my recovery from anorexia.
